Description: The protests in Los Angeles enter their fifth day as California State Governor, Gavin Newsom, filed a lawsuit against US President Donald Trump deployment of National Guard and Marine Corps troop in Los Angeles. The US Federal Court in California has issued an order limiting the number of troops pertaining to the National Guard and the Marines operating on the territory of Los Angeles as well as limiting their operational jurisdiction to assisting local and federal law enforcement and protecting federal buildings from damage. The protests spiraled out of control as a reaction towards Trump’s massive deportations as part of his immigration policies which are already crippling civil and democratic rights in the US. Governor Newsom and Trump engaged in a public confrontation criticizing each other of causing the LA crisis. The protests have spread on several locations across the US, with protesters joining the LA upheaval in unison from Texas, Austin, San Francisco and New York. Trump hasn’t rejected the idea of invoking the Insurrection Act, which would allow him to deploy military forces on US territory in order to suppress a rebellion, rioting and even enforce the law in some cases.
Impact: Currently the Los Angeles civic unrest risks of exploding a political powder keg embroiled in several domestic issues the Trump administration attempts to suppress through force. The protests have already spilled outside of Los Angeles and are gaining momentum spelling a potential prolonged domestic crisis in the US. Trump’s unilateral imposition of deportations has cascaded downward as the President is enlarging his jurisdictions and turning his country into a politically monopolized assimilation apparatus. The Federal Court blockade wouldn’t have any substantial impact if the crisis further surges, as protesters are amassing in large numbers in other cities, which in turn could prompt Trump to enlarge the deployment of the National Guard in other states. The overruling of the local government showcases the current state of the ruling American government where laws are enforced through sidestepping basic legislature, and obstacles such as lawfully guaranteed rights for due process. If the Trump administration doesn’t approach this social and political crisis through the prism of connecting with the local and statal community and government instead of enforcing effective principles of military law, the crisis could reach national levels of threats and risk to the internal stability of the US.
