Description: Turkey and Turkmenistan have signed a groundbreaking gas supply deal which commenced with political and diplomatic efforts dated Mar 2024. The state-controlled gas company Botas in Turkey has signed a supply agreement with Turkmenistan’s Turkmengaz according to which Turkey would aim to diversify its energy portfolio and leverage its strategic position as a crucial energy and natural resources supply hub for European countries. The gas supply would allegedly commence on 01 Mar 2025, while the details regarding the amount of gas supplied and pricing haven’t been disclosed.

Impact: Turkey continues to leverage its geostrategic position in terms of significant gas, oil and other natural resources supply which under current geopolitical conditions are crucial for the European continent. With the seizure of Russian supplied gas to Europe, Turkey could become one of the more significant western energy allies and position itself in highly favorable geopolitical situation. The race for energy dominance and the trade war between China and the US would only catalyze the demand for crucial energy sources with Turkey seemingly exploiting their access to both European and Asian markets.
