Description: Up to 11 people were killed in mass shooting that occurred in the town of Orebro – Sweden. Police forces acted quickly on call as they arrived at the school at 06:30 AM local time, where they were engaged in a gunfight with the perpetrator. The motive behind the shooting was still not clarified as the investigation was ongoing however, police officials stated that he acted alone and there were no clear ties to gangs or terrorist organizations. Sweden has been embroiled in gun related violence in the last couple of years, as the Scandinavian country was ranked 11th on Europe’s list of gangs – related homicides in 2021.
Impact: Internal security in European countries has been stretched thin since most of the countries are globally focused on investments within the defense industry. The socio – economic phenomena of lone gunmen and gang related violence marked a considerable uptick in the past couple of years caused by multiple social, economic and business factors. European countries could potentially face more similar cases as security services would need to expand cooperation, information exchange and preemptive investigations on a larger scale, in order to prevent similar risks and threats to public security.
