Description: Uganda’s Chief of Defense Forces Muhoozi Kainerugaba has stated that Uganda has deployed special forces units into South Sudan’s capital Juba amid concerns of rising armed tensions. Sporadic fighting commenced in the last two days between government forces and the White Militia forces, which according to South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir were supported by Vice – President Riek Machar. Kiir and Machar signed a fragile power – sharing agreement in 2018 when the civil war in South Sudan was concluded but recent armed confrontations risk at plunging the country into an extended civil war conflict.
Impact: South Sudan’s sensitive security and political state of affairs could be further exacerbated as growing violence between armed groups could engulf the country into a civil war reprisal. The southeastern parts of the African continent are currently severely destabilized as a growing civil war rages in Sudan between government forces and the RSF (Rapid Support Forces) militia and the Democratic Republic of Congo, where government forces are failing to counter armed offensive from the M23 militias. South Sudan’s recent armed violence could considerably contribute towards regional destabilization if internal coalition negotiations fail to commence in the upcoming period.
