Description: South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has been detained by the police after an impeachment procedure concluded last month. The massive operation was jointly led by South Korean police forces and investigators from the Corruption Investigation Office. Yoon Suk Yeol’s hearing has been scheduled for Thursday when he faces charges of insurrection in the midst of the illegally announced martial law on 03 Dec 2024.

Impact: Civil unrest and political turmoil levels have significantly risen since the announcement of martial law last Dec which caused the country to call for the President’s impeachment. A precedent in South Korean history, the impeachment of the President could potentially pose a short to mid – term risk for South Korean democracy and political stability which in turn could be possibly used by their greatest adversary in North Korea who had recently strengthened ties with Russia and even deployed soldiers on the ground in Ukraine.
