Description: Russian and Iranian Presidents Putin and Pezeshkian have been set to meet on 17 Jan 2025 in order to discuss strategic alliance cooperation agreement. Russia and Iran have strengthened cooperation since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and traded militarily. Iran would expect Russia’s supply of high – tech weapons such as fighter jets and missile defense systems, while Russia would expect the continuance in supply of the Iranian Shahed drones.
Impact: Both Iran and Russia are involved in regional conflicts of global repercussions with joint global interests against the US and Israel. The enhancement of cooperation and communication could be expected to become more frequent, especially with no conflict resolutions on the table for both countries in the Middle East and Europe. Iran would incentivize larger form of support from Russia since Israel has gained the upper hand in Palestine, while Russia would expect Iran’s support probably in Ukraine, Asian and African related operations for forwarding their regional interests.
