Description: Mexico has sent over 10,000 National Guard soldiers on its border with the US, after President Trump pledged to postpone the tariff impositions on the country. In return, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum promised to send the Mexican National Guard in order to prevent the proliferation of fentanyl and tackle cartel activities. During last week’s visit by the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Latin America current migrant issues were discussed with El Salvador, Guatemala which have also promised to take in migrant prisoners on their territory. The Mexican National Guard would remain across the border pass between Juarez, Texas and El Paso as an operationally political response to Trump postponing the imposition of tariffs.
Impact: The Trump administration is expected to enforce their aggressive and assertive foreign policy and practically condition allied countries such as Mexico to involve themselves in the solution of issues that mainly concern the US. Mexico’s response by sending the National Guard across the border could be considered a short – term solution as the country is facing mounting pressure from cartel violence, drug trafficking and the influx of immigrants from the US, some of them still on the border. If channels of cooperation between the countries aren’t opened soon, the migrant crisis alongside the war on drug trafficking could further escalate.
