Israel: Renewed Military Offensive Threatened by International Pressure

Description: Leaders from the UK, Canada and France issued a joint statement strongly condemning Israel’s new ground offensive on Gaza and the cessation of humanitarian aid that entered its third month. Keir Starmer, Mark Carney and Emmanuel Macron warned that Israel may soon face sanctions and be threatened to become largely isolated if Netanyahu’s government doesn’t lift the blockade on humanitarian aid in the enclave. UN aid chief, Tom Fletcher has stated that on Monday, up to five trucks of humanitarian aid entered Gaza which according to him was only a drop in the ocean as the Strip faced serious famine from the constant attacks and continuous displacement and isolation of its 2.1 million population. Netanyahu later in the day addressed the Israeli Knesset stating that large scale humanitarian crisis is widespread and the necessary aid must be allowed to enter or Israel risks losing support from its staunchest allies. The ground offensive launched over the past weekend so far has left hundreds of civilians dead and obliterated hospitals and aid centers as Israel claimed it has targeted more than 670 Hamas strongholds across Gaza. Negotiations were reported to have been ongoing in Qatar where representatives from both Israel and Hamas have reached insurmountable impasses.

Impact: The international community once again personifies its duplicitous standardization of global issues as their intensified reaction arrives in the third month of ravaging humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The ultimatum delivered jointly by France, Canada and the UK shows no indication of impacting Israel’s decisions on the ground as long as the country enjoys the unequivocal support from its strongest ally – the US. Trump’s current statements don’t signal strong condemnation or the previously speculated freezing of relations with Netanyahu, as the US continues to support Israel and its military operation. Netanyahu’s statements in the Knesset underscore his vulnerable position of governance and decision – making dependence on the far – right elements in his government as his grip for power slowly starts to loosen. The threat of international sanctions won’t impact Israel’s decisions as the ultimate hope for resolving the war lies in the ongoing negotiations which haven’t delivered any substantiative results so far.
