Israel: Hamas and Israel Agree on Initial Ceasefire

Description: Israel and Hamas have initially agreed on elementary conditions for the establishment of a 42-day ceasefire. The implementation of the agreement was expected to commence in the last week of Joe Biden’s term as US President. The agreement would be comprised of three phases in which hostage exchanges have been determined and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza.

Impact: The conclusion of presently one of the most violent conflicts would spell immense success for both US and its allies but could also disrupt Israel’s regional expansion ambitions since they had just recently entered Syrian territory. Although no concise conflict resolution is in sight, initial steps could indicate a short – term de-escalation of military activities in the region. With mixed support from his political allies, and mounting international pressure, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu could leverage Israel’s current position in the conflict to further implement Israel’s state interests and potentially create a conflict resolution foundation.
