Description: Dominican Republic’s President, Luis Abinader has announced that border security would be considerably strengthened as the growing gang violence in Haiti has caused a flowing migrant crisis. Abinader also pledged to reinforce border troops to 11,000 as he announced additional 1,500 troops to the already deployed 9,500 on top of announcing the speed up construction efforts on the border wall. Haiti enters a second year of devastating gang violence which has caused substantial humanitarian crisis in the country. Peacekeeping contingents led by Kenya numbered approximately 1,000 troops who faced difficulties in countering the alliance of gangs and reinforcement of their operational outreach in the capital, Port au Prince.
Impact: The gang violence crisis in Haiti could be greatly aggravated with the strengthened border control by the Dominican Republic. Haitians are faced with existential threats from the alliance of gangs, which plunged the country into one of the largest humanitarian crisis in the country’s history. The current state of affairs is threatening regional stability as US – China tensions are present in Panama, while Ecuador and Colombia also face resurgence of revolving armed conflicts. The lack of involvement from the international community has been additionally crippled by the US seizure of aid funds which started in Jan which could further escalate the situation as the peacekeeping contingents are struggling with countering the alliance of gangs.
