Haiti: Gang Violence Surges with no Resolution in Sight

Description: According to the United Nations more than 5,600 people have been killed only in 2024 due to gang violence in Haiti, which caused for a further humanitarian crisis to be exacerbated. Gangs held up to 80% of the nation’s capital as the UN has difficulties deploying a peacekeeping mission in country with a possible expected veto from China in the Security Council. Troops from Kenya have been deployed with little to no avail as weapons continued to enter the country and ended up in the ownership of the gangs.

Impact: Without increased involvement from the US and the UN the situation in Haiti is expected to worsen significantly as the humanitarian crisis also exponentially growing. Low on the priority list, Haiti’s internal turmoil and crisis if spread could potentially be a risk to neighboring countries in Central America. No significant efforts have been made to facilitate the easement of outside assistance in terms of humanitarian support, nor has the gang conflict been addressed as the gangs control most of the capital, violence and civil unrest is expected to reach new heights in the upcoming period.
