Description: Greek authorities have stated that an extremist group identifying themselves as the Revolutionary Class Struggle claimed responsibilitiy for the explosion that happened on 11 Apr near the offices of the Hellenic Train company. The group also claimed responsibility for a similar device planted near the Greek Ministry of Labor in Feb as they stated the reasons behind the attack to be in solidarity with the Palestinian people and as a sign of armed uprising against the government for the fatal railway accident in 2023. Greek police and domestic security forces have stated that the group pertains to the new wave of domestic extremists calling for protests through armed violence.
Impact: Greece has a longstanding history with domestic extremist groups which were mostly active during the 1980’ and 1990’. The emergence of a new armed extremist group raises concerns over the country’s internal stability. The tragic railway accident caused several waves of protests throughout many Greek cities and some of them have apparently evolved into adopting violent methods against the sitting government. The group’s manifesto in claiming responsibility for the attacks in solidarity of the Palestinian people could indicate on foreign financing and more threaded ideology behind the attacks. Currently there are no signals of a larger internal destabilization, however, further attacks could considerably elevate the security risk in the country.
