Description: German authorities have uncovered extensive presence by terrorist organization Hezbollah in the northern parts of the country. Conducted investigations disclosed information on over 1,200 supporters who used mosques, cultural centers and youth organizations for recruitment, propaganda activities and the procurement of weapons. The investigations led to the arrest of multiple people which were involved mostly in recruitment and some of them in the procurance of drone components and other weapons. Previously, operations have been conducted to counter terrorist influence in Germany with the closure of Hezbollah – sponsored TV channel Al – Manar TV and arrests of supporting groups such as the Mahdi Scouts.
Impact: In critical times for European security, the presence of large terrorist organizations could indicate on potential internal security malpractices as most European countries are focused on enlarging defense budgets. Hezbollah’s presence in Europe hasn’t been a secret as they would seek to exploit the ceasefire with Israel to enlarge their organization both military – wise and through extended recruitment cycles. The dismantling of smaller cells such as this one although unlikely could potentially lead to attacks in Europe. Security services across the EU should enhance cooperation in order to counter the multi-faceted threat approach adopted by international terrorist organizations
