Description: Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning has stated that China aimed at closely cooperating with Canada in the upcoming period as both countries face substantial economic threat from US tariffs. Statements for close cooperation from China came a day after Mark Carney’s victory as he became the most probable candidate to replace exiting Canadian PM Justin Trudeau. Before Carney’s victory, China imposed tariffs on over $2.6 billion agricultural and food products on Canada as a response to the levies Canada introduced in Oct 2024 to Chinese electric vehicles and steel and aluminum products. Mao Ning further suggested that Canada should seriously review its approach towards China as they both face substantial threat from US tariffs.
Impact: The US aggressive and assertive foreign policy has forced close strategic partners such as Canada to consider lining economic and strategic interests with US adversaries such as China. Even though Canada has previously imposed tariffs on Chinese products, retracting that decision seems like the most likely move in the upcoming period in order to counter and prevent measures caused by the imposition of US tariffs on Canadian goods. The trade war incited by the US has provoked the restructuring of existing strategic alliances and would further cause global trade market disruptions and fluctuations as big investors would aim at strengthening their portfolios in turbulent times.
