Brazil and China: President Lula da Silva to Meet Xi Jinping in Upcoming Months

Description: Brazilian President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva is scheduled to meet his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping in China next month. The meeting would be the fourth between the two Presidents since Lula took office in 2023 and is expected to further devise strategic ties between the countries, as China is Brazil’s largest trading partner. The two countries, close partners through the BRICS alliance, reaffirmed their partnership last year in Nov when the presidents signed crucial bilateral agreements on infrastructure, energy and agriculture. The presidents are set to meet in May and then again in Jul for the BRICS summit and probably in Nov for the UN climate summit.

Impact: China dedicated their foreign policy efforts towards a fast-paced strategic development of bilateral and multilateral agreements. While the US focuses on isolationism and conservatism in its foreign policies, China would exploit the global power vacuum created by the US withdrawal from global affairs announced by theTrump administration. Brazil is set to lucratively benefit from the trade war confrontation between the superpowers and acquire favorable economic conditions which would facilitate the much-needed support for the country’s stifling economy in volatile market conditions.
