Description: Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov hosted the Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Moscow. The parties discussed decades of long strategic partnership ties and undeniable support in future endeavors. The highlight of the meeting were Wang’s comments on the rekindled relationship between Russia and the US, as the Chinese Foreign Minister stated that China completely supported the conciliatory state of relations. He also denounced the speculated deterioration of relations between China and Russia since the US reestablishment of relations with the latter. Wang also confirmed China’s willingness to be involved in the resolution for the war in Ukraine all the while confirming his country’s stance and continued support for Russian strategic goals in the future.

Impact: Wang’s visit to Moscow highlights the strong and continued partnership between Russia and China amid abrupt US interference in their bilateral relations. The visit aimed at emphasizing China’s position on key global issues such as the war in Ukraine, the Indo – Pacific power dynamics and reconfirm China’s stance on the Taiwan question. Only a day before Trump’s imposition of tariffs on both key strategic partners and adversaries, the meeting accentuates the strategic allegiance between China and Russia and their intent on furthering joint global strategic goals. The US will need to adapt its approach towards its foreign policy if the aim remains to keep its dominant geopolitical position. China and Russia would continue to closely cooperate in order to emerge on the forefront of geopolitical dominance in face of growing economic threat from the US.
