US: United Nations Rejects Resolution on Ukraine Proposed by the US

Description: The United Nations General Assembly has rejected the resolution regarding the war in Ukraine proposed by the US which excluded language such as Russian aggression and invading forces. The resolution passed 93 – 18 with 65 abstentions one of which was the US. The vote only emphasizes the distinctive approach the US and EU have adopted towards the conflict and the current upending of transatlantic relations. UN has adopted the Ukrainian version of the resolution which stated that all illegally obtained territory by way of military aggression would not be recognized as valid and also stimulated the withdrawal of Russian and North Korean troops from Ukraine.

Impact: Even though EU and the US have once again ended up on the opposing sides of the Ukraine coin, the UN vote does little towards the war peace resolution. The vote only affirms current international positions on the Ukraine – Russia war and practically puts the peace negotiations in unchartered territory. Real politics dismounts resolutions brought forward by international organizations such as the UN as they don’t have executive power to act upon the concluded resolution. The adoption of the Ukraine proposal could add some political points to the country’s negotiating position which ultimately wouldn’t make much of a difference since there is no unified approach towards conceptualizing an acceptable resolution to the war between the EU and the US. The resolution only deepens the transatlantic political rift and positions Ukraine in a proverbial political and security limbo.
