Germany: CDU / CSU Bloc Wins Elections but What is Next?

Description: The Christian Democratic Union of Friedrich Merz has officially won the German elections with a 28.5% turnout and was authorized to form a coalition government. The poll predictions were accurate as second was the far – right AfD which would most likely end up in opposition as the party has been deemed to be radically far – right by the German BfV. The outlook for the future Merz government would be difficult to grasp as he faces difficult choices ahead and is expected to tackle crucial political and economic issues which his predecessor Olaf Scholz failed to address. Merz would most likely be Germany’s next chancellor however the jury was still out on what other political entity would end up on the governing pole. Shortly after winning the election, Merz addressed the public and stated that Europe should look for an independent future away from the US and also challenged the future outlook of NATO as an organization.

Impact: Europe would look to Germany for guidance in times of grave transatlantic crisis and embarking on that independent journey would require for Germany to expediently form a stable government. In geopolitically challenging times, political coalitions could be integral towards stability and future progress as Merz and CDU would face mounting pressure to challenge the voters requirements. AfD could pose as a substantial political agitator, since Germany’s firewall legislature prevents it from entering the ruling government. Additional political decadence among Germany’s ranks could destabilize the country and subsequently the continent as Europe is currently against growing security, political and economic challenges amid the devaluation of relations with the US.
