Germany and Hungary: Alice Weidel and Viktor Orban Meet in Budapest

Description: Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has received Germany’s far – right AfD leader Alice Weidel in what was deemed a productive and welcoming meeting. Weidel stated that Orban should be considered a role – model in European politics and pledged to work closely with his Fidesz party if the AfD enters the German parliament on Germany’s election day set for Feb 23. She also stated that AfD expected support from Orban in what she designated as the dismantling of Europe’s corrupt and liberal elite in Brussels. Orban on the other hand has complemented AfD’s efforts on antimigration policies and promised closer economic ties between Hungary and Germany.

Impact: Germany could face an unprecedented political crisis in the upcoming elections over the resurgence of the far – right movement which is apparently widely supported as political landscapes across the continent could reshape Europe’s future. AfD’s previous endorsement by tech billionaire Elon Musk and by extension from the Trump’s administration and now from Hungary’s Prime Minister could further empower the far – right movement in Europe as the entire political landscape looks to shift towards conservatism and nationalism.
