US: Trump Meets with the Jordanian King Abdullah

Description: US President Donald Trump has hosted Jordanian King Abdullah II as they discussed the current situation regarding the Hamas – Israel war and the displacement of Palestinians. The meeting emphasized some concessions made by both sides as Trump has apparently abandoned the idea of withholding aid for countries refusing to receive forcibly displaced Palestinians, while King Abdullah had said Jordan would receive up to 2,000 sick children from Gaza. Trump also reiterated his plans to displace Palestinians while King Abdullah stated that Arab countries such as Saudi Arabia and Egypt were still aiming towards a solution which would be in favor of everyone involved.

Impact: Trump’s negative sentiment towards Palestinian national ownership of land could force a negative counteroffer from the Arab countries. Jordan, Egypt, Qatar and Saudi Arabia are the main countries that are facilitating the continued ceasefire agreement, Trump’s statements could severely undermine the effort that mediators put into ensuring the ceasefire agreement. The meeting emphasized the approach adopted by the US to threaten and condition nations while forcibly ensuring the incorporation of their own interests. Even though the Arab mediation coalition could agree upon some concessions, the ceasefire agreement seems more likely to be broken by Saturday as all the parties involved are scrambling for their own independent interests instead of imposing effective mediation between Israel and Hamas.
