Description: Chinese government officials have brokered a ceasefire agreement between the Myanmar military and the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) in an effort to de – escalate border fighting. The talks between the opposing sides were held in Kunming, Chinese city in the southwestern parts of the country where officials from MNDAA and the Myanmar military agreed on a temporary seizure of military operations on Myanmar’s border with China. The conflict began in 2021, when the Myanmar army overthrew the civilian government, with the Ta’ang National Liberation Army and the Arakan Army both launching operations against Myanmar’s military junta in 2023.
Impact: China’s aim is to stabilize all and any potential military conflicts in the region as it impacts their foreign trade and their long – term belt and road initiative. Myanmar’s internal conflict escalated in the previous months as fighting between the opposing sides intensified significantly which in the long – term could influence the Chinese export and trade economy as well as regional security. China’s geopolitical aspirations are global and in that aspect the country would look to stabilize regional relations with bordering countries and minimize the impact of military conflicts on a regional level to facilitate further economic growth.
