Iran: Officials Hold Talks Over Nuclear Program with EU Representatives

Description: Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht met with representatives from France, Germany and the UK to discuss further steps in lifting sanctions against Iran and their nuclear program development. All the parties have been reserved in their statements as discussions were deemed constructive and promising. Iran is looking to resurrect their nuclear program and reignite negotiations regarding the lifting of sanctions against the country before Donald Trump assumes the US Presidency. EU countries are willing to negotiate terms under which Iran wouldn’t abuse the program to develop nuclear weapons.

Impact: With suffering loses through its proxies in Hezbollah and Hamas in the Middle East and facing uncertain position amid the US political transition, Iran would intensify negotiations and could possibly be susceptible to unyielding compromises imposed from EU. Western allies drew red lines in the Iranian nuclear program and wouldn’t be expected to allow Iran to commence the development of their nuclear program. The discussions shed a positive light on future dispute resolution in the Middle East when a regional player like Iran is concerned.
